For #GuineaPigAppreciationDay, the two earliest examples I’ve found of guinea pigs in the European visual record:

1. Painting attributed to Giovanni da Udine, n.d., artist active early 1500s to death in 1564

2. Drawing from the Felix Platter album, collected sometime between 1546-54

Drawing collected by Felix Platter, to be used in Gessner’s Historiae animalium. The drawings were made by several artists, mostly anonymous, and were collected between 1546 and 1558 (this one must date to no later than 1554 as it served as a reference for Gessner’s woodcut published that year). Bijzondere collectie Universiteit van Amsterdam collection.

it’s insane to me that people get so mad at animals for doing animal stuff. people will post 4 paragraph Facebook rants about a killdeer nesting in their gravel and include pics of the bird taking care of their nest with 0 idea that they’re like, occupying an Important Driveway. they’re just being little dudes and you’re seething

image

imagine running a bird themed blog and not knowing a single fucking thing about bird intelligence

are you okay

holy shit. i just looked and this is the only post on the blog. they made it just about this. i am working on a formal apology to killdeer stat

obviously killdeer are smart, this one just made a tumblr blog

This came to me in a dream last night:

Frosty the snowman is a Golem, right?

Given that he’s animated with Christmas cheer or w/e I don’t think hes a golem.

in the casual modern fantasy use of “golem” to mean “any automaton created from a distinct natural material,” sure fine whatever, frosty’s a snow golem, check out monster manual 17 for stats to threaten your party with an abominable snowman

however, textually, frosty is animated by the residual magic in “that old silk hat they found,” which was further described in the Rankin Bass explorations of mid-century christmas novelty songs as the hat of one Professor Hinckle, inept stage magician. All of which places it quite squarely in the broader category of Americana with only minimal relationship to Jewish mysticism.

Frosty is a servitor construct a la the animated brooms from the sorcerer’s apprentice.

The only thing I have to add is Frosty’s Winter Wonderland establishes that three things can bring a snowman to life:

  • The silk hat
  • The love of another living snowman
  • The Power of the Lord
